As we reach the midpoint of 2024, it’s clear this year has seen some of the most severe data breaches in recent memory. The volume of compromised data has already surpassed 1 billion records, with the impact of these breaches growing more concerning by the day.
- AT&T experienced two major breaches this year. In July, a breach exposed phone numbers and call records of nearly 110 million customers, originating from an account with data provider Snowflake. Earlier in March, a breach released 73 million records, including encrypted passcodes that put millions of accounts at risk.
- Change Healthcare suffered a ransomware attack that compromised a significant portion of Americans' medical and billing information. The breach has led to widespread disruption in healthcare services and poses long-term risks to affected individuals.
- Synnovis, a UK pathology lab, was hit by a ransomware attack in June, disrupting healthcare services across London and affecting data from approximately 300 million patient interactions.
- Snowflake was targeted in a massive data theft, with stolen records including 560 million from Ticketmaster and 79 million from Advance Auto Parts, among others. The breach exposed vulnerabilities in Snowflake’s security practices.
- Cencora, with over a million patients affected.
- MediSecure, impacting nearly 13 million Australians.
- Kaiser, which inadvertently shared sensitive patient data with advertisers.
- USPS, which improperly shared user addresses with tech companies.
- Evolve Bank, where 7.6 million individuals were impacted by a ransomware attack.
These incidents highlight ongoing vulnerabilities and underscore the urgent need for enhanced cybersecurity measures.
